Do you have an abundance of apples this fall? Try making this Skillet Apple Pie. It’s the best apple pie you will ever eat!
We went apple picking last weekend. The weather was perfect for this fall activity. It was cloudy and breezy and cool. We drove up to a part of our beautiful area that we had not been before. The orchard we went to was on the side of a mountain. It was absolutely beautiful!
We were fortunate enough to get to pick Jonagold apples. They are super sweet and huge! we had a ton of rain this summer which has made for a bumper apple crop.
Emma did more eating than picking but she still had so much fun! The kids love to eat the apples whole!
Stephen was glad to have apples close to the ground to pick himself.
We picked 64 pounds of apple! Yes, you read that right. What do you do with that many apples?!
You bake an apple pie of course!
But not just any apple pie.
No, this is the best apple pie. This Skillet Apple Pie is easy to prepare and tastes so much better than a regular apple pie. It has a caramel flavor that takes this pie to another level. To make this pie even easier, I used store bought pie dough (I never have luck with pie crusts).
Do you have a cast iron skillet? I sure hope so! This may just be the best thing you ever make in it! To begin, all you need to do is melt butter in the skillet, add brown sugar and combine the two. That becomes the caramel that makes this cake amazing! You then put one pie crust down, your apples and then another pie crust on top. Then, you make an egg white wash and cover the top of the pie and then sprinkle sugar on top of the wash. The sugar browns and caramelizes. And oh my goodness, do you have one amazing pie!
Just beware: It’s hard to stop eating this pie!
What is your favorite way to use apples?
- 4 pounds of baking apples, peeled and sliced thin
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¾ cup sugar
- ½ cup butter
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 package pie crusts (or use your own recipe)
- 1 egg white
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a large bowl, combine apples, sugar and cinnamon.
- In a 10-inch cast iron skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Once butter has melted, add brown sugar and stir constantly until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat.
- Place 1 pie crust over brown sugar/butter mixture. Spoon apples on top of crust. Lay the other pie crust on top of apples.
- Whisk the egg white until it is foamy. Brush the egg white on top of the pie crust and sprinkle the 2 tablespoons of sugar on top.
- Cut 4 or 5 slits in the pie crust to allow for steam to escape.
- bake for 1 hour or until golden brown.
- Cool before serving and enjoy!
